New Delhi: The Election Commission of India on Wednesday issued a notice to Mallikarjun Kharge over his controversial remarks targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The move came after a formal complaint was filed by a delegation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The poll body has taken serious note of the matter and is expected to review the statements in the context of election conduct guidelines.

BJP Delegation Seeks Strict Action

Earlier in the day, a BJP delegation comprising senior leaders, including Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, approached the Commission demanding strict action against Kharge.

Speaking after the meeting, Sitharaman described the remarks as “condemnable” and said they undermined democratic institutions. The BJP argued that such statements were inappropriate, especially during ongoing election campaigns.

Leaders Call Remarks ‘Outrageous’

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju also criticised Kharge’s comments, calling them unacceptable and urging the Congress leader to issue a public apology. He stated that the party had requested the Commission to take firm action to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Other members of the delegation, including Arjun Ram Meghwal, were also present during the meeting with the poll panel.

Kharge Clarifies His Statement

The controversy stems from remarks made by Kharge during a press conference in Chennai, where he criticised the Prime Minister and the BJP. Kharge later clarified that his comments were not meant literally but were intended to suggest that the government was “terrorising” opposition parties through alleged misuse of agencies.

He maintained that his criticism was directed at what he described as political pressure on opposition groups.

Context of Election Campaigns

The incident comes at a time when election campaigns are intensifying in key states, including Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Political rhetoric has sharpened, with parties trading allegations over governance and democratic practices.

The Election Commission’s response will be closely watched as it assesses whether the remarks violate the model code of conduct and decides on further action.
