Kharge clarified that his statement was not meant literally (Img: Internet)
New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge sparked a political controversy after referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in strong terms during an election rally in Chennai.
The comment, made while criticising the alliance between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, quickly drew reactions from across the political spectrum.

Following the backlash, Kharge clarified that his statement was not meant literally. He said his remarks were directed at what he described as a pattern of “threatening behaviour” by the Prime Minister and the central government.
Kharge alleged that central agencies were being used to exert pressure on political opponents, and said his comment was intended in that context rather than as a direct label.
The Bharatiya Janata Party criticised Kharge’s statement, calling it inappropriate and indicative of declining political discourse. Party leaders accused the Congress of resorting to personal attacks instead of engaging in substantive debate.
Senior BJP functionaries also suggested that such remarks reflect frustration within the opposition during a high-stakes election period.
The controversy comes during the final phase of campaigning for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The Congress is contesting the polls as part of an alliance led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
Meanwhile, the AIADMK has aligned with the BJP, setting the stage for a competitive electoral battle in the state. Alliances and campaign rhetoric have intensified in the lead-up to voting.
Voting for the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly is scheduled soon, with results to be declared on May 4. The outcome is expected to shape the political landscape in the state and influence national dynamics.
As campaigning concludes, sharp exchanges between leaders highlight the increasingly combative tone of the election season, with both sides seeking to consolidate voter support.
