Kolkata: The RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case returned to the centre of West Bengal’s political discourse after Ratna Debnath, mother of the victim and now a BJP MLA, made sharp remarks targeting former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following the recent Assembly election results.
Debnath, who won from the Panihati constituency, posted on social media after meeting newly elected Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at Nabanna. In her post, she contrasted her personal loss with the political defeat of the Trinamool Congress leadership.
She stated that while she had lost her daughter, Banerjee had lost power, adding that those responsible for injustice would eventually face consequences.

After the meeting, Debnath told reporters that her primary objective remained securing justice in the case involving her daughter, a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024.
She said she had already submitted several names linked to the case to investigators earlier and had now shared them again with the new administration.
Debnath also praised Adhikari, saying that “the power of honesty is immense” and that persistent efforts against injustice eventually yield results.
The RG Kar case had triggered nationwide outrage after allegations surfaced that evidence was tampered with to shield the accused. Following widespread protests and legal intervention, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation.
Last week, the High Court directed the CBI to form a three-member Special Investigation Team to further probe the matter.

Debnath has repeatedly alleged that several individuals connected to the incident have not yet come under the scope of investigation. She has also accused the previous state administration and sections of the police machinery of failing to handle the matter properly.
The new Bengal government has already initiated action in connection with the case. IPS officers Vineet Goyal, Indira Mukherjee and Abhishek Gupta, who held important positions during the investigation period, have been suspended pending departmental inquiries.
Despite entering active politics, Debnath said the tragedy had permanently changed her life and that her fight for accountability would continue.
