Sushmita Dev’s Exit Adds to Trinamool Turmoil (Image Internet)
New Delhi: The Trinamool Congress is facing renewed internal challenges after Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev resigned from all party positions, becoming the second member of the Upper House from the party to step down from organisational responsibilities this week.
Dev, who joined the Trinamool Congress in 2021 after leaving the Congress, announced her decision while describing it as the beginning of a new phase in her public life. However, she has not indicated any immediate plans regarding her Rajya Sabha membership.
Her resignation comes at a time when the party is already grappling with growing signs of internal dissent following its recent electoral setback in West Bengal.
Earlier this week, veteran Trinamool leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy resigned from both Parliament and the party. In a strongly worded statement, Roy criticised the party leadership and reflected on political developments in the state following the Assembly elections.
His departure marked a significant moment for the party, given his long association with the Trinamool Congress and his prominent role in national politics.
The resignations follow an unprecedented revolt within the party's legislative wing in West Bengal. A group of 58 Trinamool MLAs reportedly defied the party leadership and backed Ritabrata Banerjee for the post of Leader of the Opposition instead of the party's official candidate, Shovandeb Chattopadhyay.
The development exposed divisions within the organisation and highlighted dissatisfaction among sections of the party's lawmakers.
Political observers believe the back-to-back resignations and legislative rebellion could intensify pressure on the party leadership. The events have sparked speculation about the future direction of the Trinamool Congress and whether more leaders could distance themselves from the organisation.
While the party has not officially commented on the broader implications of the resignations, the developments suggest that managing internal unity may become a key challenge in the coming months as the party seeks to regroup after electoral setbacks.
