Kolkata: A fresh FIR has been lodged against Mamata Banerjee over alleged communal remarks made during a political rally ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

The complaint, filed by a Kolkata resident, has been registered by Kolkata Police following allegations that the speech could promote communal disharmony and public unrest.

Complaint Based on Rally Speech

According to the complaint, the remarks were made by Mamata Banerjee during a public meeting in March 2026. The complainant alleged that certain statements made during the rally were capable of creating fear, tension and misunderstanding among different communities in the state.

The complaint was initially submitted to police authorities in May and has now been converted into an FIR. The complainant argued that the speech contained references that could be interpreted as inflammatory in the politically sensitive atmosphere ahead of Assembly elections.

Allegations of Creating Communal Tension

The FIR states that the comments could create apprehension and insecurity among citizens and potentially disturb communal harmony. The complainant sought legal action, alleging that the remarks may influence public sentiment and contribute to social divisions during the election season.

Authorities are expected to examine the contents of the speech and related evidence as part of the investigation.

Another Case Filed Earlier This Year

This is not the first legal complaint faced by the TMC chief in recent months. In May, another FIR was reportedly registered against Mamata Banerjee following allegations that certain public remarks had hurt religious sentiments.

That complaint alleged that statements made during separate public events offended sections of the Hindu community and could contribute to social unrest. Police registered the case under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Political Temperature Rises Ahead of Polls

The latest FIR comes at a time when political tensions are already running high in West Bengal ahead of the Assembly elections. The legal developments are likely to add another layer to the increasingly heated political contest in the state.

While supporters of Mamata Banerjee have dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, the complaints have triggered fresh debate over political rhetoric and its impact during election campaigns.
