Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Writes To PM Modi (Img: X)
New Delhi: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the Centre to bring constitutional amendments to permanently maintain the strength of the Lok Sabha at 543 members.
The letter comes amid the ongoing debate over the proposed delimitation exercise and the implementation of 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies.
In his communication to the Prime Minister, Vijay referred to the resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on August 12, 2026, regarding the delimitation of parliamentary and assembly constituencies.
The Tamil Nadu Assembly resolution demanded that the total number of Lok Sabha seats should remain fixed at 543 and that the existing allocation of seats among states should not be altered.
Vijay requested the Centre to consider the Assembly’s recommendations and introduce necessary constitutional changes to safeguard the current representation structure.
The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister also highlighted the need for implementing one-third reservation for women in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and future state assembly polls.
The demand comes in the backdrop of discussions around the Women’s Reservation Act, which provides for 33% reservation for women in legislative bodies after the completion of delimitation and census-related processes.
The delimitation issue has triggered concerns among several southern states, which fear that population-based seat redistribution could reduce their parliamentary representation.
Tamil Nadu has argued that states that successfully controlled population growth, improved healthcare standards and contributed significantly to economic development should not face a reduction in political representation.
The Assembly resolution noted that Tamil Nadu’s Lok Sabha seats were reduced from 41 to 39 in 1967, highlighting past changes in parliamentary representation.
The resolution received support from opposition parties, including the DMK, along with ruling alliance partners CPI and CPI(M). Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin said his party has consistently worked to protect Tamil Nadu’s interests on the delimitation issue.
