Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) suffered another setback on Thursday as Rajya Sabha MP Prakash Chik Baraik resigned from the Upper House, becoming the third party parliamentarian to step down in recent days. His resignation comes after similar exits by Sukhendu Sekhar Roy and Sushmita Dev, signalling growing unease within the party’s parliamentary ranks.
Baraik is expected to meet Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan to formally submit his resignation. In his letter, he thanked the Chair and the Rajya Sabha Secretariat for their support during his tenure and confirmed his decision to step down with immediate effect.
With this resignation, TMC’s strength in the Rajya Sabha is set to fall to 10 members. Party insiders suggest that the situation may worsen, with reports indicating that a few more MPs are considering quitting in the coming days. If confirmed, this could further strain the party’s position in Parliament.
The developments have added to speculation about internal dissatisfaction and shifting political alignments within the organisation.
When asked about his future plans, Baraik said he had taken the decision based on the “opinion of the people of West Bengal” but did not confirm any next step. On the possibility of joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he said, “Time will tell,” leaving room for political speculation.
Prakash Chik Baraik is a tribal leader from Alipurduar district in North Bengal, associated with the Siliguri region. He was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha in August 2023 on a TMC ticket and is among the few tribal representatives from the state in the Upper House.
During his tenure, he focused on issues related to tea garden workers, including wages, provident fund benefits and welfare schemes. He also served as the TMC district president for Alipurduar.
Baraik’s resignation comes amid widening unrest within the party. Earlier this week, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy stepped down from both the party and the Rajya Sabha, followed by Sushmita Dev’s exit. Separately, reports of dissent among several MLAs have added to concerns about internal cohesion within the Mamata Banerjee-led party.
The series of resignations has intensified political debate over stability within the TMC as it navigates increasing challenges in both Parliament and state politics.
