TN Poll 2026: Actor Vijay named TVK’s CM candidate, alliance decision to be made soon

Chennai: Tamil film actor and Tamilaga Vetti Kazhagam (TVK) party chief Thalapathy Vijay has been declared the party's chief ministerial candidate for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. He has also been given the authority to make final decisions regarding alliances. The decision was taken unanimously at the TVK's special general assembly meeting held on Wednesday at a private hotel in Mahabalipuram. Vijay arrived at the meeting in his trademark white shirt and slightly bearded look.

A total of 12 resolutions were passed during the meeting, covering issues such as the safety of women in Tamil Nadu, the repeated arrests of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy, and the Special Revision Procedure (SIR) of the electoral roll.

Tributes paid to the 41 people killed in the Karur rally
The TVK general assembly resolution stated that Vijay is a leader loved by all sections of the population. The party will contest the 2026 assembly elections under his leadership. He is empowered to make all decisions related to the alliance. The meeting began with a tribute to the 41 people killed in the stampede accident at the Karur rally. Members observed a two-minute silence to pay tribute to the deceased. A resolution also demanded adequate police protection for Vijay and the public during TVK events.

Strategic Decisions Will Be Made in a Timely Manner
Vijay stated at the meeting that the current political climate favors the party, so strategic decisions regarding the upcoming elections will be made in a timely manner. It is worth noting that TVK has already announced that it will contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections on its own. Vijay has launched sharp attacks on the state's ruling DMK government in recent months, and his popularity among the public is rapidly increasing.
