New Delhi: The Nation will have next Vice-President by tomorrow evening if everything goes on smoothly as per schedule. The voting begins tomorrow 9 September at 10 in the morning in Room number F-101, Vasudha, Parliament House and closes at 5pm followed by counting of votes at 6. PC Mody, Secretary General Rajya Sabha, is the Returning Officer for the Vice-Presidential election. He said that the polling will take place on Tuesday in Room No. F-101,
Vasudha, Parliament House.
Mody said, "The electoral college for election to the Office of the Vice-President of India consists of the Members of both Houses of Parliament. The nominated Members of Rajya Sabha are also eligible to be included in the Electoral College and, therefore, are entitled to participate in the election."
Rajya Sabha Secretariat said that election elements are underway. In a statement the RS Secretariat said, "The polling arrangements in Parliament House are being made by Shri PC Mody, the Returning Officer for the Vice-Presidential Election, 2025, and Secretary-General, Rajya Sabha."
The Vice-President is elected by an Electoral college which comprises of elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and elected members of the Lok Sabha.
Secret Ballot: The voting is conducted via a secret ballot to ensure privacy.
Proportional Representation: The election uses the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote.
Vice-President salary and allowances are regulated under the Salaries and Allowances of Officers of Parliament Act, 1953.
According to the Act, there is no provision for a regular salary for the Vice-President.
A Rajya Sabha Official said, "There is no provision for a specific salary for the Vice-President; instead, they receive remuneration and benefits commensurate with their role as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha."
The Rajya Sabha Chairman gets a salary of Rs 4 lakh per month. Besides the Vice-President enjoys several perks and allowances including free accommodation, medical care, train and air travel, a landline connection, mobile phone service, personal security and staff.
A former Vice-President gets a pension of about Rs 2 lakh per month and a Type-8 bungalow. Besides he is also entitled to one personal secretary, one additional personal secretary, one personal assistant, one physician, one nursing officer, and four personal attendants.
Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was the first Vice-President of India. He took oath at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 13 May 1952.
