Kolkata: Voting for the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 witnessed a strong response, with voter turnout reaching 78.8% by 3 PM on April 23. Earlier in the day, polling had crossed 62.18% by 1 PM, indicating steady participation across constituencies.

Polling is being conducted in 152 constituencies spread across north Bengal and several southern districts. These seats form part of the state’s total 294 assembly segments, making this phase crucial for setting the tone of the election.

Key Political Battlelines

The contest is primarily between the ruling Trinamool Congress led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party. Both sides are locked in an intense political battle, especially amid controversy surrounding voter list revisions.

With approximately 3.6 crore eligible voters across 16 districts, political observers expect close contests in at least 80 constituencies. The outcome of this phase could significantly influence the overall electoral trajectory.

Prime Minister Reacts to Turnout

Addressing a rally in Mathurapur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the high voter turnout as a positive sign for democracy. He said the strong participation reflects growing public confidence in the electoral process.

His remarks come as both major parties attempt to mobilize maximum voter support in what is shaping up to be a tightly contested election.

Violence Reported in Parts of the State

Despite largely peaceful polling, incidents of violence were reported from Nowda and parts of Asansol. In one such incident, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul alleged that her vehicle was attacked during polling in the Rahmat Nagar area.

According to reports, stones were thrown at her car, damaging its windows. A complaint has been lodged at Hirapur Police Station. Paul is contesting from the Asansol South constituency.

Round 2 voting

The second phase of voting is scheduled for April 29, while counting of votes will take place on May 4. With high voter participation and sporadic tensions, the first phase has set the stage for a closely watched electoral battle.
