Patna: Khatu Shyam Ji, widely revered across northern India, was originally known as Barbarik, a young and fearless warrior from the Mahabharata era. Renowned for his unmatched valor and devotion, Barbarik vowed to support the weaker side in any war. Gifted with extraordinary skills, he possessed three infallible arrows capable of ending battles in a single strike.
Legend holds that Barbarik was devoted to Lord Krishna. Before the epic Kurukshetra war, Krishna, aware of the young warrior’s unmatched power, sought to test his devotion. Barbarik pledged to fight for the weaker side, but Krishna knew that if Barbarik joined, the battle’s outcome could be drastically altered. To ensure the moral and cosmic balance of the war, Krishna requested Barbarik’s head as a sacrifice. Demonstrating ultimate faith and humility, Barbarik offered his head willingly, an act that sealed his eternal legacy.

After his sacrifice, Lord Krishna blessed Barbarik, granting him the boon that in the Kali Yuga, he would be worshiped as Shyam, the “God of the Poor and Faithful.” Today, Khatu Shyam Ji is venerated not just as a warrior but as a symbol of selflessness, devotion, and protection for the vulnerable. His shrine in Khatu, Rajasthan, attracts pilgrims year-round, with special devotion peaking during his birthday celebrations, known as Janmotsav.
