Rajpal Yadav set to walk out of Tihar Jail after Delhi High Court grants interim bail in ₹9 crore cheque bounce case. Will he clear the dues before the next hearing on March 18?
The actor had been in prison since last week
New Delhi: Rajpal Yadav is set to be released from Tihar Jail after the Delhi High Court granted him interim bail on Monday in a ₹9 crore cheque bounce case.
Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma granted interim relief to the actor until March 18, 2026. The court directed him to furnish a bail bond of ₹1 lakh along with one surety. During the hearing, the court had initially asked Yadav to deposit ₹1.5 crore by 3 PM as a condition for interim bail.

After counsel for the complainant, M/S Murli Projects Pvt Ltd, confirmed that the amount had been credited to the company’s bank account towards the outstanding dues, the court allowed the bail plea. Yadav will now remain out of custody until the next hearing and is expected to clear the remaining liability to avoid serving his sentence.
The matter traces back to 2010 when Yadav borrowed ₹5 crore from the Delhi-based firm to finance his directorial venture Ata Pata Laapata. The film, released in 2012, failed commercially, and repayment issues followed.
In 2018, a magisterial court convicted Yadav and his wife Radha under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act after seven cheques issued by him bounced. He was sentenced to six months of simple imprisonment. The conviction was upheld by a sessions court in 2019, prompting him to move the Delhi High Court in appeal.

In 2024, the High Court suspended his sentence and directed him to take sincere steps to repay the dues, which had by then risen to ₹9 crore. However, earlier this month, the court ordered him to surrender after observing repeated breaches of his undertakings to repay the complainant.
Following his surrender earlier this month, several members of the film fraternity expressed solidarity. Actor Sonu Sood reportedly offered professional support by signing Yadav for an upcoming project and providing financial assistance. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) also appealed to industry members to back the actor during the legal battle.
With interim relief now granted, Yadav’s legal fate will hinge on whether he can settle the remaining dues before the next court date.
