Chennai: After being numerically strengthened by its newfound partner DMDK of late actor-politician Vijayakanth, and overcoming the alleged hitch over the nagging power-sharing demand by its key and long-time ally, the Congress, the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu on Saturday formed a seven-member committee with alliance partners for the ensuing Assembly polls, as per Dynamite News correspondent.
The committee would be headed by DMK MP and Treasurer T.R. Balu. The panel would consist of seniors like Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru, Rajya Sabha member Tiruchi Siva, and Lok Sabha member A. Raja, among others. The committee would begin seat-sharing negotiations from Sunday at the DMK headquarters.
The formation of the seat-sharing panel, which was reportedly delayed after a section of Congress leaders broached the issue of power-sharing post the election, was finally constituted after AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal categorically clarified that such a demand was not on the party's agenda.
According to reports, as per the practice followed by the DMK over the years, it would hold the first round of seat-sharing parleys with the Muslim outfit IUML, which too had formed a five-member panel.
Following the IUML, the DMK is expected to start its talks with the Congress, which had been expressing dissatisfaction over the delay in initiating the process, despite more than 75 days having passed since the AICC formed a seat-sharing panel headed by AICC Tamil Nadu election in-charge Girish Chodankar. The talks are expected to be completed by month-end or early March.
