Late TN CM Jayalalithaa’s house seized over tax dues
Hyderabad: Municipal authorities in Hyderabad have sealed a property belonging to former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa over long-pending property tax dues exceeding ₹82 lakh. The action was carried out by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation on Tuesday.
The property, a G+4 structure located in Srinagar Colony under the Yousufguda area, had accumulated arrears over several years, prompting enforcement measures.
Officials stated that the total outstanding amount stands at ₹82,91,822 after applying rebates under the One-Time Settlement (OTS) scheme. However, with the scheme valid only until March 31, the dues could increase if not cleared within the stipulated period.

The property has reportedly been under tax scrutiny since 2017, with unpaid dues continuing to mount over time.
According to civic officials, the building was assessed under the commercial category, which attracts higher property tax rates. This classification was reportedly based on its earlier use as a private office.
The categorisation significantly contributed to the rise in tax liabilities, leading to the current dispute.
Authorities said due process was followed before sealing the premises. Notices were issued last month by the Deputy Commissioner to individuals associated with the property, seeking payment of dues.
With no response or compliance from the concerned parties, officials proceeded with the sealing. Civic authorities emphasised that enforcement action was taken only after repeated attempts to resolve the issue.
Deepak Jayakumar, nephew of the late leader, had earlier approached the civic body requesting that the property be reclassified as residential. He maintained that the building has been used for residential purposes since 2017.
However, the reclassification request remains unresolved, which has further complicated the matter and contributed to the accumulation of dues.

Jayalalithaa is believed to have purchased the property in 1967 for a modest sum. Over the decades, its value appreciated significantly, reflecting Hyderabad’s real estate growth. The late leader maintained a long association with the city, dating back to her acting career, and owned multiple properties in the region.
Officials indicated that further action will depend on the response from the concerned parties and the clearance of outstanding dues. The case highlights the importance of compliance with municipal tax regulations, regardless of ownership.
