Tragic deaths of two young female athletes at SAI hostel in Kollam
Kollam: In a tragic incident, two teenage female athletes residing at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) hostel in Kollam district were found dead by suicide on Thursday morning. Both girls hailed from Thiruvananthapuram district. One was a Class 12 athletics trainee, while the other was a Class 10 kabaddi player, police said.
The tragedy came to light around 5 a.m. when fellow hostel inmates noticed that the girls had not reported for their morning practice session. Concerned, hostel authorities went to their room and, after repeated knocks went unanswered, broke open the door. Both were found hanging from ceiling fans, officials confirmed.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the athletes were normally housed in separate rooms. However, on Wednesday night, they had stayed together in the same room and were last seen by hostelmates in the early hours of Thursday. No suicide note was recovered, leaving the exact reasons behind the deaths unclear.
The Kollam police have begun a detailed investigation. Officers are recording statements from fellow athletes, trainers, and family members to piece together the circumstances leading to the suicides. The bodies will be handed over to the families after post-mortem examinations are completed.
