Chennai: The Madras High Court on Thursday dismissed an appeal filed by actor Tamannaah Bhatia seeking ₹1 crore in damages from Power Soaps. The court upheld a 2017 single-judge order that had earlier rejected her plea.

A division bench comprising Justice P Velmurugan and Justice K Govindarajan Thilakavadi found no grounds to interfere with the previous ruling, effectively closing the case in favour of the company.

Dispute Over Use of Images

The case dates back to an agreement signed in October 2008 between Tamannaah and Power Soaps. Under the contract, the company was permitted to use the actor’s images on its product packaging for one year, ending in October 2009.

According to the actor, the company continued to use her photographs on soap wrappers even after the agreement expired, without obtaining her consent. She argued that the alleged unauthorised use caused financial and reputational loss.

Tamannaah had sought ₹1 crore in damages along with a permanent injunction to restrain the company from further use of her images.

Court Finds Lack of Evidence

However, the single judge had earlier dismissed the plea after observing that the materials submitted by the actor were not sufficient to establish her claims. The court noted that the documents presented failed to conclusively prove that the company was responsible for the continued use of the images.

Agreeing with this assessment, the division bench upheld the findings and declined to grant any compensation. The court also did not issue any injunction against the company.

Company’s Stand

Power Soaps had argued during the proceedings that the damages claimed were speculative and not backed by concrete proof. The company maintained that there was no basis for awarding compensation in the absence of clear evidence of misuse.

The High Court’s ruling effectively accepts this argument, reinforcing the requirement of substantive proof in such contractual disputes.

Actor’s Recent Work

On the professional front, Tamannaah recently completed two decades in the film industry. She is set to appear next in the upcoming film Vvan- Force of the Forest, alongside Sidharth Malhotra.

She was last seen in the series Do You Wanna Partner, co-starring Diana Penty, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video.
