Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah resigned from his post on Thursday, triggering a major leadership transition in the Congress-led state government. The resignation came after a breakfast meeting with cabinet colleagues at his official residence in Bengaluru.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Siddaramaiah confirmed that he had submitted his resignation to the Governor’s Office. Since Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot was out of Bengaluru, the resignation was handed over to his office officials.

The move follows days of political speculation over a possible change in leadership after the Congress government completed three years in office.

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is expected to take over as the next Chief Minister, according to party sources and ministers present at the meeting.

Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil stated that Siddaramaiah informed cabinet colleagues about the leadership change and said the transition was being carried out in accordance with directions from the Congress high command.

Sources indicated that further discussions may take place in Delhi regarding the new cabinet structure and possible appointments of deputy chief ministers.

Emotional Scenes At Breakfast Meeting

The meeting at Siddaramaiah’s official residence, ‘Kaveri’, witnessed emotional moments as DK Shivakumar touched Siddaramaiah’s feet and embraced him in the presence of senior Congress leaders and ministers.

The gesture was widely interpreted as a symbolic handover of leadership within the Karnataka Congress. Several ministers, including Priyank Kharge, MB Patil, KJ George, Ramalinga Reddy and HK Patil, attended the meeting amid heightened political activity in the state capital.

Supporters Celebrate Outside Shivakumar Residence

As reports of Shivakumar’s elevation gained momentum, his supporters gathered outside his Bengaluru residence and celebrated by distributing sweets and raising slogans.

Former MP DK Suresh, Shivakumar’s brother, also reached the residence during the celebrations. Tight security arrangements were deployed outside the homes of both leaders as political developments unfolded rapidly throughout the day.

The Congress leadership is expected to formally announce the next chief minister after consultations with the party high command.
