Kolkata: Trouble appears to be mounting for Abhishek Banerjee after another complaint was filed against him over a social media post that allegedly hurt communal sentiments and could disturb social harmony.

According to police, the complaint was lodged at Bhawanipur Police Station by Arnab Kanti Das, who termed the post “highly irresponsible.” A copy of the post, shared on May 2, was also submitted along with the complaint.

The controversy is linked to a post in which Banerjee allegedly referred to a “Bangla Birodhi Gujarati gang” while targeting the Centre and the Election Commission of India during the election campaign in Falta, an area under his Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency.

In the post, Banerjee challenged the BJP and central authorities to contest and defeat the Trinamool Congress in Falta, saying that even the combined strength of the Centre and the Election Commission could not dent the “Diamond Harbour Model.”

The complainant objected to the use of the word “gang” in reference to the Gujarati community, claiming it carried a negative and criminal connotation. According to the complaint, describing an entire community in such a manner goes against the spirit of “Unity in Diversity” and may create social tension.

A senior Kolkata Police officer said that a preliminary inquiry has been started into the allegations. Police added that further legal action will depend on the findings of the probe.

The latest complaint comes just days after another FIR was registered against Banerjee at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station over alleged provocative remarks made during an election rally on April 27.

During that rally, Banerjee had allegedly challenged the BJP and remarked that he would see “who comes to save them after midnight on May 4,” triggering a political controversy.

Police officials said investigations in both matters are underway, and necessary legal action will be taken based on the outcome of the inquiries.
