New Delhi: North India is set to get major relief from the ongoing intense heatwave conditions over the next three days, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a significant drop in temperatures along with thunderstorms, strong winds and isolated hailstorm activity across several regions.

According to IMD, maximum temperatures in many parts of Northwest and Central India-where mercury has been hovering around 45°C or higher-are expected to fall sharply between May 28 and May 30.

IMD scientist Akhil Srivastava said that changing weather patterns, triggered by a western disturbance along with incoming easterly winds, will bring widespread weather activity over the Western Himalayan region and adjoining plains.

“If we look at Northwest India, maximum temperatures have primarily been running high, hovering at 45°C or above. Over the next three days, due to a western disturbance and easterly winds, thunderstorm activity is expected over the Western Himalayan region and adjoining plains,” he said.

He further added that a sharp decline in temperature is likely across several states. “A drop of 5°C to 8°C, and in some isolated pockets up to 10°C, is expected between May 28 and May 30. This will bring significant relief from heatwave conditions,” he noted.

Regions likely to get relief:

  • Punjab
  • Haryana
  • Uttar Pradesh
  • Madhya Pradesh

However, IMD has also issued a cautionary alert for intense weather activity, including thunderstorms, high wind speeds and hailstorms in several areas.

Wind speeds in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and nearby regions may reach 60–70 kmph, with gusts going up to 80 kmph. In some areas of Uttar Pradesh, winds could even intensify to 80–100 kmph.

Hailstorm warnings have also been issued for parts of the Western Himalayan region, including:

  • Jammu and Kashmir
  • Himachal Pradesh
  • Uttarakhand
  • Punjab
  • Haryana
  • Uttar Pradesh

The IMD has advised people to stay cautious, avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather conditions, and follow official advisories as unstable weather conditions are expected to continue for the next few days.
