Seattle: Belgium brought an end to the United States' FIFA World Cup journey with a victory of 4-1 goal in the Round of 16, silencing a passionate home crowd and shattering the co-hosts' dream of a fairy tale run on home soil.
The Red Devils delivered a clinical display, with Charles De Ketelaere emerging as the hero after scoring twice. His early strike gave Belgium the perfect start, and although the United States briefly reignited hopes through Malik Tillman's equaliser, Belgium quickly regained control and never looked back.
A costly error by American goalkeeper Matt Freese allowed Hans Vanaken to extend Belgium's advantage before Romelu Lukaku put the result beyond doubt with a late goal, sealing Belgium's place in the quarter-finals.
For the United States, the defeat marked a heartbreaking end to a campaign that had captured the imagination of home fans. Playing as one of the tournament's co-hosts, the Americans had hoped to make a deep run and create history in front of their supporters. Instead, Belgium's experience, composure and ruthless finishing proved too much to overcome.
The match had been overshadowed by the controversy surrounding U.S. striker Folarin Balogun. The forward was initially suspended after receiving a straight red card in the previous round, but FIFA later overturned the automatic one-match ban following an appeal. The decision sparked widespread debate after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly confirmed that he had spoken to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, urging the governing body to review the incident. While FIFA insisted that its independent disciplinary committee made the final decision without political interference, critics questioned whether the intervention had compromised the tournament's integrity.
Despite the attention surrounding his return, Balogun was unable to influence the contest as Belgium's organised defence kept the American attack under control throughout the match.
Belgium will now face Spain in a blockbuster quarter-final, while the United States exits the tournament with its World Cup dream brought to a painful end. For the home fans in Seattle, it was a night that began with hope but ended in heartbreak.
