Riyan Parag Vape During IPL Match
New Delhi: Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag has come under scrutiny after visuals appeared to show him vaping in the dressing room during an IPL 2026 clash against Punjab Kings on Tuesday. The incident reportedly took place in the 16th over of Rajasthan’s successful chase of 223 runs, with teammates nearby.
The visuals quickly drew attention, sparking questions about adherence to league rules and player conduct within restricted areas of the stadium.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) enforces strict guidelines regarding behavior inside stadium premises. Smoking and the use of tobacco-related products are not permitted in dressing rooms or dugouts, except in designated zones.
Although vaping is not always explicitly mentioned in public regulations, it is generally treated under similar restrictions due to health and safety considerations. If found in violation, Parag could face disciplinary action from the governing body.
The controversy also intersects with Indian law, which bans e-cigarettes under The Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act (PECA), 2019. The law prohibits the production, sale, purchase, and advertisement of such devices across the country.
Violations can attract penalties including imprisonment of up to six months, fines, or both. While it remains unclear whether this specific incident could lead to legal consequences, it has intensified public debate.
The incident comes at a challenging time for Parag, who is leading Rajasthan Royals this season following a leadership change. His performance with the bat has been inconsistent, managing just 81 runs in seven innings prior to this match.
This dip in form has already drawn criticism, and the latest controversy adds further pressure on the young captain.
Despite the distraction, Rajasthan Royals completed a successful chase of 222 runs, winning the match by six wickets and handing Punjab Kings their first loss of the season.
However, the focus has largely shifted from the result to the off-field developments involving Parag.
In a separate incident earlier this season, Rajasthan Royals team manager Romi Bhinder was fined Rs 1 lakh and issued a warning for using a mobile phone inside the dugout during a match. The Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) also sought an explanation, highlighting strict enforcement of match-day protocols.
