New Delhi: The thrilling journey of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 has now come to an end. The final match was played at the Narendra Modi Stadium, where India, with a brilliant performance, defeated New Zealand by 96 runs to win the title. With this victory, India lifted the T20 World Cup trophy for the third time, creating history.
The Indian team has previously won the T20 World Cup twice. India first won the title in 2007 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, defeating Pakistan. Subsequently, in 2024, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the team defeated South Africa to lift the trophy. Now, in 2026, under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, Team India defeated New Zealand to win the title for the third time.
Notably, no team in the history of the T20 World Cup had ever defended its title, but India, by winning the trophy for the second consecutive time, achieved this record.
The popularity of the T20 World Cup is constantly increasing, and with it, the commercial value of the tournament is also increasing. Consequently, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has increased the prize money for this tournament by nearly 150 percent over the past 19 years.
This time, the ICC has set a total prize money of $13.5 million (approximately ₹123.77 crore) for the T20 World Cup 2026, which is approximately 20 percent more than the 2024 T20 World Cup. The total prize money in 2024 was $11.25 million (approximately ₹104 crore).
The winning Indian team in the T20 World Cup 2026 received a prize money of $3 million (approximately ₹27.50 crore). Runner-up New Zealand was awarded $1.6 million (approximately ₹14.67 crore).
The two losing semi-finalists-England and South Africa-received equal sums of $0.79 million (approximately ₹7.24 crore).
The ICC also determined prize money for the other participating teams. Teams ranked fifth to 12th were awarded $0.38 million (approximately ₹3.48 crore).
Teams ranked 13th to 20th received $0.25 million (approximately ₹2.29 crore).
Overall, the T20 World Cup's prize money has been steadily increasing with its growing popularity, making it one of the world's largest and most lucrative cricketing events.
