"What is wrong in saffron being the first jersey?" the official said, while highlighting that changes in sports kits are a normal part of evolution.

Federation Explains Reason Behind Colour Change

Hockey India said the shift from blue to orange was also linked to visibility issues during matches. According to the federation, blue jerseys can sometimes blend with blue-coloured turfs, making it difficult for spectators to track players.

The new saffron kit is designed to improve contrast and visibility during international tournaments.

Former Indian hockey captain Viren Rasquinha criticised the decision, saying the blue jersey had become a symbol of Indian hockey's identity and legacy.

Saffron Jersey to Debut at World Cup Events

Hockey India unveiled the new kit ahead of next month's World Cup tournaments for both the men's and women's teams.

The federation said the saffron colour represents courage, sacrifice and victory, while the design draws inspiration from the Indian flag and the rising sun. Along with the saffron jersey, the teams will also have a white kit featuring the same design.
