Google pays homage to Karl Landsteiner on his birth anniversary

 Google pays tribute to Nobel laureate Karl Landsteiner on his 148th birth anniversary. He was born on 14 June 1868 in Vienna, Austria. 

 

 

Discovery of blood groups
Landsteiner discovered the existence of blood groups A, B, AB, O.  As a result of his discovery the first blood transfusion occurred in 1907. 

 

 

Other discoveries with Erwin Popper 
Karl is also credited for his groundwork, together with Erwin Popper, which resulted in the discovery of polio virus.  It was the first step towards effecting a treatment for polio. 

 

Landsteiner along with Erwin Popper worked in many other areas also including immunity and antibodies. 

 

 

Nobel Prize 
Karl Landsteiner was honoured with Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1930.
