Tokyo: Japan Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on Friday declared a state of emergency in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo to curb a surge in COVID-19 cases.

The state of emergency will come into effect from Sunday to May 11.
"We must take strong measures in a focused manner while many people are on break during Golden Week to bring the virus under control," Kyodo news agency quoted the prime minister as saying in a parliamentary session before he finalized the decision at a COVID-19 task force meeting in the evening.(UNI)
