New Delhi: BJP leader and Member of Parliament from Pilibhit Lok Sabha Constituency, Varun Gandhi has come out in support of farmers, who are holding “Kisan Mahapanchayat”, in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh, saying “we need to start re-engaging with them in a respectful manner,”.

“Lakhs of farmers have gathered in protest today, in Muzaffarnagar. They are our own flesh and blood. We need to start re-engaging with them in a respectful manner,” said the BJP leader in a tweet.

“Understand their pain, their point of view and work with them in reaching common ground,” he said. His remarks came in view of “Kisan Mahapanchayat ', which is being held in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh, where thousands of farmers from several districts of UP as well as other states have gathered against the three farm laws.

Mr Gandhi also released his book titled “A Rural Manifesto” and said “in tribute to India’s marginal farmer whose daily toil is as much an act of defiance as an article of faith,”. “It is a comprehensive overview, written over two and a half years, that I hope will sow the seeds of a rural policy rejig,” he said.

Soon after his tweet, BJP MLA from Khurja, Vijendra Singh tweeted that Gandhi should differentiate between farmers and "anti-national elements". Responding to the tweets of both BJP leaders, Rashtriya Lok Dal president Jayant Chaudhary hailed what Gandhi was saying and also said Vijendra Singh to "get his eyes tested" or visit some villages in his constituency and repeat this absurd statement,".

Kisan Mahapanchayat is being organized by the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), which they formally called it “Mission Uttar Pardesh” before the Assembly election which is pending next year. In statement, SMK said with this Mahapanchayat the “Mission Uttar Pardesh” will begin,”. Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi also said, the whole country is with the farmers to save agriculture and their rights. “The arrogance of any government had never worked in front of the farmers’ voice,” she said in a tweet.

According to a report, over 8,000 security personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order situation in the area. The farmers' protest against the three contentious laws have completed over nine months since they first arrived at the Delhi borders. The farmers have been demanding the repeal of the laws which they are afraid will do away with the MSP system, leaving them at the mercy of big corporations. (UNI)
