New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed the state of Tamil Nadu to decide the time slot for bursting firecrackers on Diwali  festival with a condition that the period should not exceed two hours.

The apex court's decision came while hearing the state government's plea seeking reconsideration of its order that had set a deadline of two hours from 8 pm to 10 pm for bursting of crackers. Today's decision of the court is stipulated only for Tamil Nadu; other states will have to follow the 8 pm-10 pm slot.

The state government in its plea had asked the top court to extend the two-hour duration for Tamil Nadu. However, the apex court refused to extend the time slot.

On October 23, the Supreme Court had refused to impose a blanket ban on cracker bursting with certain conditions. The court had stated that people will only be allowed to burst crackers between 8 pm and 10 pm on the festival of Diwali.

This year Diwali will be celebrated on 7 November. (ANI)
