New Delhi: Google has issued a serious global alert for smartphone users, warning that millions of fraudulent text messages are targeting Android and iPhone devices across the world. The tech giant has urged users to immediately delete any suspicious messages, saying that even keeping them on your device could compromise your security and bank information.

Scam Messages on the Rise

According to a recent report by Forbes, cybercriminals many traced to China are sending out deceptive messages designed to trick users into revealing personal and banking details. Common examples include fake alerts such as:

  • “Your toll has been deducted without payment.”
  • “Your package couldn’t be delivered.”
  • “Click here to claim a refund immediately.”

Each of these messages typically contains a malicious link that, once clicked, allows hackers to access sensitive information such as passwords, location data, and financial credentials. These scammers are using foreign SIM cards to bypass tracking, creating new numbers faster than authorities can block them.

Android vs iPhone: Which Is Safer?

Google says its Android security systems block over one billion spam calls and messages every month, while Gmail filters out 99.9% of spam emails. Apple, on the other hand, recently introduced new call screening and message protection tools in iOS 26 to stop suspicious links from reaching users.

Despite Apple’s latest improvements, Google claims Android still has a stronger defense mechanism—though the company acknowledges that no device is completely safe. Among Android devices, Google Pixel phones reportedly offer the best spam protection, followed by Samsung and other models. iPhones provide consistent protection across devices but can still be targeted by advanced scams.

Why You Should Delete Suspicious Messages Immediately

Experts, including the FBI, warn that users should never store suspicious messages on their devices a practice known as smishing (a blend of “SMS” and “phishing”). Even without clicking on a link, simply previewing the message can activate hidden scripts or alert hackers that your number is active, increasing your chances of being targeted again.

If you accidentally click on a malicious link, take immediate action:

  • Check your bank accounts for unusual transactions.
  • Change all passwords, especially for banking and email.
  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA).
  • Report the incident to your local cybercrime cell or law enforcement.

How to Stay Protected

  1. Enable spam filters: Android: Settings → Messages → Spam Protection iPhone: Settings → Messages → Filter Unknown Senders
  2. Keep your device updated: software updates include essential security patches.
  3. Never reply or call back unknown numbers, as this confirms your number’s validity.

The Bottom Line

Digital fraud is growing faster than ever, with new “refund,” “delivery,” and “payment” scams appearing daily. Google’s warning serves as a reminder that one careless click can open the door to hackers. Stay alert, delete suspicious messages instantly, and never trust unknown links your next text could be a trap.
