UP bans physical and psychological punishment in schools; Strict new guidelines issued

UP has changed rules for disciplining school children, prohibiting physical or psychological punishment. The Basic Education Department has instructed students to adhere strictly to these guidelines.

Lucknow: The states rules for disciplining school children have changed and teachers are no longer permitted to use physical force. Teachers will not give any kind of physical punishment in private or public schools.

All students enrolled in schools have been instructed by the Basic Education Department to adhere strictly to the prohibition against administering any form of physical or psychological punishment.

In reference to the directives issued by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights the department stated that specific guidelines have been provided to refrain from administering any form of physical or psychological punishment to students enrolled in the school.

Tell the children that they can speak out against it while simultaneously promoting it widely. It is necessary to alert the relevant authorities about this. All BSAs have been instructed by Director General of School Education Kanchan Verma to set up spaces for children to communicate in all schools including hostels, JJ Homes and Child Protection Homes. An NGOs assistance may be sought in such establishments. There should be a grievance box at every school where students can file complaints.

Take a look at the Parent Teacher Committees complaints. It is important to address complaints as soon as possible. The education department should make such arrangements at the block district and state level so that the childrens actions and complaints can be reviewed he said. No child will be physically punished while adhering to RTE guidelines. Mental harassment will not be inflicted upon him.

No Discrimination

Violations will be dealt with disciplinary. No child should face discrimination because of their place of birth, sex, caste, religion or race. These rules must be adhered to by every school. To address the complaints of parents and students a toll-free number 1800-889-3277 has been established. This number must be posted on the notice board and at the main entrance of every school per the Director Generals directive. Students and parents have the option to file complaints. Investigations into the complaints are necessary and appropriate action should be taken.
