New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi expressed strong opposition to the proposed new bill on the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in Parliament. She stated that the bill weakens the legal right to employment for poor laborers in rural India and increases central government control. Priyanka Gandhi said that the existing law has been instrumental in strengthening the rural economy for the past 20 years.
Priyanka Gandhi said that under the existing law, the poor were guaranteed 100 days of employment, and it was demand-driven. She alleged that the new bill allows the central government to send a predetermined amount, thereby weakening the authority of the Gram Sabhas (village councils). She pointed out that this is contrary to the 73rd Constitutional Amendment and the fundamental spirit of Panchayati Raj.
