A casual Hinge chat turned into a career breakthrough for a final-year student, leading to a ₹18 LPA job offer. From backlogs to big tech how one swipe unexpectedly changed everything.

A Hinge match that turned into a high-paying job
New Delhi: A chance conversation on a dating app has turned into a life-changing professional breakthrough for a final-year university student. A Reddit post revealing how a Hinge match helped him secure a ₹18 lakh per annum job offer has gone viral, sparking conversations about networking, luck, and unconventional career paths.
The story was shared on the subreddit r/Indiangirlsontinder under the title “Got an 18 LPA offer because of a Hinge match.” The student described a difficult placement season, despite studying at what he called a “tier 1-ish” college. Academic hurdles played a major role in holding him back.
He revealed that he had multiple backlogs two official and several more due to an accident which led many companies to reject his profile before interviews. After facing repeated rejections, he eventually accepted a ₹7 LPA offer at an AI startup, more out of fear than confidence.
Around the same time, the student matched with a woman on Hinge and began chatting casually. During one conversation, he mentioned his job and placement struggles. That’s when things took an unexpected turn.
According to the post, the woman told him that her friend worked as an HR manager at a major tech company in Bengaluru. She helped get his profile noticed internally, which soon resulted in an interview call—something he had struggled to secure for months.
Unlike typical placement interviews, the process focused less on textbook problem-solving and more on his existing work. The interviewers reviewed his GitHub and LinkedIn profiles and asked him to explain his projects in detail.
The student said his work stood out because it wasn’t based on standard templates. He had forked a popular open-source project, optimized it, added AI features, and improved the user experience. He also openly acknowledged using AI tools to learn and build projects, saying they helped him create strong, explainable work.

Despite feeling that his interview performance was only average, the result shocked him. He received a Letter of Intent offering a compensation of up to ₹18 lakh per annum, subject to internal approvals.
“All because I matched with a random girl on Hinge and talked about my work,” he wrote, calling the experience surreal.
The post quickly gained traction on Reddit, drawing thousands of upvotes. Users congratulated him, with some calling it incredible luck, while others joked about whether he took his Hinge match out on a date. The story has since become a reminder that opportunities can sometimes come from the most unexpected places.
