A joyous wedding celebration in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district turned into a moment of terror when a packed rooftop gave way, injuring dozens and prompting a swift rescue response and an official investigation into the structural failure.

Chamba: A wedding ceremony in the scenic Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh became the setting of a shocking accident earlier this month. A large group of attendees gathered on the rooftop to participate in cultural festivities when the structure abruptly collapsed. The frightening moment was captured on a mobile camera and has been widely circulated on social media platforms, drawing widespread concern and sympathy.
The accident took place in Shahwa village, which falls under the Jungra Gram Panchayat in the Churah assembly constituency. The collapse injured at least twenty people and created panic among everyone present. What was meant to be a joyful event quickly turned into a desperate situation as people screamed for help and dust filled the air.
Reports indicate that a traditional cultural performance known as a jatra was underway on the rooftop. This attracted a crowd of around one hundred people who gathered to enjoy the music and dance. The video circulating online shows people celebrating together when the mud roof suddenly gave way, sending many tumbling down with the collapsing structure.

Initial reports suggest that the mud roof was not designed to withstand the load of so many individuals. The combined weight caused the structure to weaken rapidly and collapse within seconds. Around twenty five people were trapped under the debris, prompting immediate calls for help from those who managed to escape.
Local residents acted without hesitation, rushing toward the damaged structure to rescue those who were trapped. Many injured individuals were pulled out by hand before medical teams arrived. Their timely response helped prevent further injuries and ensured that the severely injured were immediately taken for treatment.

The injured were first transported to Teesa Hospital for preliminary treatment. According to officials, most of the injured sustained only minor wounds. However, three individuals who suffered more serious injuries were shifted to the Medical College and Hospital in Chamba for advanced medical attention. The Deputy Commissioner of Chamba confirmed that an administrative team reached the site quickly to coordinate the rescue and provide support.
Local MLA Hans Raj reached the site soon after receiving news of the collapse. He inspected the area, spoke to the families present and later visited Teesa Hospital to check on the injured. He directed medical staff to ensure proper care and closely monitor the patients.

Authorities have now begun an inquiry into the incident. The structural integrity of the building will likely be examined to assess whether negligence or poor construction contributed to the collapse. Officials aim to determine how such an accident occurred and identify measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
In a separate incident, a wedding in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh also witnessed chaos when the stage collapsed during the ceremony. Several senior political leaders along with the bride and groom fell to the ground, highlighting that structural safety at large gatherings remains a major concern across regions.
