New Delhi: Hybrid vehicles are steadily gaining popularity in India, with SUVs like the Toyota Hyryder and Maruti Grand Vitara attracting buyers for their fuel efficiency. However, a used Toyota Prius listed online is now grabbing attention for offering nearly 40 kmpl mileage at a price comparable to a Tata Nexon.

The 2016 Toyota Prius, currently available for Rs 16.99 lakh on the used-car market, is an imported unit from Japan. The hybrid sedan is being discussed among auto enthusiasts because of its rare presence in India and its impressive fuel economy figures.

Hybrid pioneer still makes headlines

Globally, the Toyota Prius is widely recognised as one of the first mainstream hybrid cars. The model helped popularise hybrid technology long before it became common in the Indian market.

The Prius was designed with a strong focus on aerodynamics to maximise efficiency. While its styling may appear unconventional compared to modern SUVs, its rarity and distinctive design continue to attract attention.

Mileage figures that stand out

The biggest highlight of the Prius remains its fuel efficiency. Reports from owners of the 2016 model suggest real-world mileage figures of around 37 to 40 kmpl under careful driving conditions.

The model is powered by a 1.8-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor and an e-CVT gearbox. Though the combined power output stands at a modest 121 bhp, the setup prioritises efficiency over outright performance.

In 2025, a newer Toyota Prius made global headlines after achieving nearly 39.5 kmpl during a cross-country drive in the United States.

Features and space add value

Despite being nearly a decade old, the Prius comes equipped with features such as dual-zone climate control, LED headlamps, push-button start and a touchscreen infotainment system. It also offers a spacious cabin and a large 690-litre boot.

Maintenance could be a challenge

While Toyota vehicles are known for reliability, maintaining an imported Prius in India may not be easy. Spare parts availability and repair costs could become concerns for owners.

Buyers willing to spend slightly more can also consider newer hybrid SUVs like the Hyryder or Grand Vitara, which offer better service support and modern features.
