CM Nitish Kumar recommends CBI probe into NEET aspirant death
Patna: Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Samrat Chaudhary has stated that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has requested the Government of India to hand over the investigation of the murder case of a NEET student in Patna to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Chaudhary shared this information in a post on X on Saturday. He wrote that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has requested the Government of India to hand over the investigation of the murder case of a NEET student in Patna (Case No. 14/26) to the CBI. He added that a transparent and just investigation of the incident should be ensured.
A day earlier the parents of the deceased girl had met Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar at his residence alleging that the state police was trying to hush up the matter.
FIR lodged by the Patna Police
A special investigation team (SIT) of the state police is already probing the case, and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is now expected to register a separate case based on the FIR lodged by the Patna Police.
The central agency will examine all evidence gathered so far and record statements from suspects, the arrested individual, hospital personnel, family members and police officials involved in the initial investigation.
The victim’s parents have alleged that their daughter was sexually assaulted and accused the state police of attempting to portray the incident as a case of suicide. In connection with the matter, one hostel employee has been taken into custody.
On Friday, emotional scenes were witnessed outside the official residence of Director General of Police Vinay Kumar, where the grieving parents-who belong to neighbouring Jehanabad district-met him to voice their concerns.
“Our hopes for justice have been shattered today. The DGP told us he considers this a suicide case. He said he could arrange a meeting with Home Minister Samrat Choudhary if we were dissatisfied. We are deeply disappointed,” the victim’s mother told reporters.
Meanwhile, a forensic examination of the clothes worn by the girl at the time of her hospitalisation has revealed the presence of semen, indicating a strong possibility of sexual assault and harassment.
A senior police official said DNA profiling of the semen samples is underway and will be matched with the DNA of the arrested person as well as other suspects. “That is why DNA samples are being collected from multiple individuals as part of the ongoing investigation,” the official added.
