New Delhi: The Government of India has announced the appointment of Abhay Kumar, a senior Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 2003 batch, as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Abhay Kumar, an experienced diplomat and author, has served India in various capacities around the world and brings extensive bilateral and multilateral experience to his new assignment.

Experienced Diplomat with Global Postings

Throughout his diplomatic career, he has held key postings including as India’s Ambassador to Madagascar and the Union of the Comoros, Deputy Ambassador to Brazil, and First Secretary and Spokesperson at the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, among other roles.

He is also the first resident Indian Ambassador to Georgia and currently serves as Deputy Director General of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) in New Delhi.

Strengthening India-Azerbaijan Ties

In his new role in Baku, Abhay Kumar is expected to further strengthen diplomatic engagement between India and Azerbaijan, building on shared interests in energy, trade, cultural exchanges, and strategic cooperation. The appointment demonstrates India’s continued focus on enhancing ties with Azerbaijan, a key partner in the South Caucasus region.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) will soon issue a formal press release detailing the date of assumption of charge and other aspects of the posting. Traditionally, such ambassadorial designations are followed by the presentation of credentials to the President of the host country, a formal diplomatic protocol that marks the official start of the ambassador’s tenure.

Abhay Kumar’s rich professional background and diverse global experience are anticipated to play a significant role in advancing India’s diplomatic objectives in Azerbaijan.
