New Delhi: US Vice President JD Vance has reportedly contacted Iran’s security chief, Mohsen Rezaei, in a fresh diplomatic effort to restart peace negotiations and prevent another round of American military strikes against Tehran.
According to the reports, Vance sent the letter at the direction of President Donald Trump. The communication, followed by exchanges between American and Iranian officials, reportedly focused on creating a framework for renewed negotiations rather than outlining the terms of a final peace agreement.
The diplomatic outreach comes amid heightened regional tensions and uncertainty over the future of the conflict.
Washington has reportedly urged several Gulf Arab nations to prepare for a possible brief but intense military operation against Iran after the November 3 US midterm elections. However, President Donald Trump has yet to decide whether to approve another round of strikes, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran began in late February, escalating tensions across the Middle East and disrupting global energy supplies and markets.
Tehran subsequently restricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor carrying a significant share of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. While , Washington has also maintained a naval blockade of Iranian ports.
Iranian military officials have warned that any renewed American attack could prompt wider retaliation, potentially targeting US-linked infrastructure, including data centres and artificial intelligence facilities.
Tehran is continuing discussions with regional intermediaries to bring the US-Iran negotiations back on track and resume normal maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
On Wednesday , Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that renewed Israeli-led military action in the Gulf could have severe consequences for international markets, affecting energy producers and consumers worldwide.

In a post on X, Araghchi said Iran's armed forces remained prepared to defend the country while Tehran continued to pursue a diplomatic solution.
He also indicated that discussions were underway on implementing a seven-day proposal aimed at ending the conflict and reopening the strait.
Regional mediators, including Qatar, are reportedly working to facilitate renewed US-Iran talks. Potential proposals include sanctions relief for Tehran in exchange for permitting UN inspectors to access Iranian nuclear facilities damaged during the conflict.
