New Delhi: Snapchat parent Snap is reportedly preparing to spin off a portion of its artificial intelligence division into a separate company called Dotmo, a move that could reshape the firm's approach to emerging AI technologies and interactive digital experiences.

According to reports, the new venture will focus on building advanced AI models capable of generating video content and powering interactive gaming experiences. The decision is said to be driven in part by the significant costs associated with developing and scaling AI video-generation technologies.

A New Chapter In Snap's AI Strategy

The proposed spin-off reflects a broader effort by Snap to explore specialised business models for technologies that fall outside its core social media operations. Dotmo is expected to operate independently and pursue opportunities in gaming and entertainment sectors rather than products directly linked to Snapchat.

Industry observers view the move as an attempt to balance innovation with financial efficiency while maintaining a stake in future growth opportunities.

Following The Specs Playbook

The development comes months after Snap introduced another standalone venture focused on wearable technology. Earlier this year, the company launched a separate entity dedicated to smart glasses development, culminating in the unveiling of its first augmented reality glasses.

By creating focused subsidiaries, Snap appears to be separating high-investment experimental projects from its primary business operations.

How Dotmo Will Operate

Reports indicate that Dotmo will function as an independent company and will not rely on direct funding from Snap. However, Snap's Chief Technology Officer Bobby Murphy is expected to play a major role as a lead investor and stakeholder in the venture.

Several employees from Snap's existing AI teams are also expected to join the new company.

Technology And Future Funding Plans

As part of the arrangement, Snap is reportedly expected to license certain technologies to Dotmo, allowing the new company to adapt them for gaming and interactive entertainment applications.

In return, Snap would retain a substantial ownership stake. Reports also suggest that Dotmo may eventually seek external investment as it expands its operations and develops new AI-driven products for the market.
