Pune: A major crackdown has been launched across Pune district after 18 people died within 48 hours allegedly after consuming methanol-contaminated liquor. The deaths, reported from Pimpri Chinchwad and Pune city areas, have exposed the dangerous spread of illicit country liquor networks operating in the region.

According to police officials, 13 deaths were recorded in the Phugewadi and Dapodi areas of Pimpri Chinchwad, while five others died in Hadapsar and Kalepadal in Pune city. Initial reports linked the deaths to unrelated medical conditions, but investigators later noticed common symptoms among the victims, including severe dizziness, vomiting and abdominal pain all considered early signs of alcohol poisoning.

Post-Mortem Findings Trigger Criminal Investigation

Authorities intensified the probe after post-mortem reports indicated suspected methanol poisoning. Police have now registered cases under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder and causing harm using poisonous substances. Relevant provisions of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act have also been invoked.

Investigators identified Yogesh Wankhede as a key suspect in the case. He later surrendered before the police and was taken into custody. During interrogation, officials learned that the accused allegedly supplied the contaminated liquor in both Pune city and Pimpri Chinchwad.

State Excise Department Superintendent Atul Kanade said methanol was allegedly mixed with the liquor before distribution, leading to the fatalities. Officials are now questioning the accused to uncover the wider network involved in the illegal trade.

Multiple Arrests Made, Crime Branch Takes Over Probe

Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissioner Vinay Chaube confirmed that five accused are currently in police custody, while two others are being questioned by the State Excise Department. The investigation has now been transferred to the Crime Branch for a detailed inquiry.

Residents in affected localities alleged that illegal liquor sales had been continuing openly in Dapodi, Phugewadi and Hadapsar for a long time without strict enforcement action.

Families Recall Final Moments of Victims

Family members described the sudden deterioration in the victims’ health after consuming the liquor. Relatives said several victims began vomiting and complaining of severe stomach pain within minutes.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed police and excise officials to take strict action against everyone involved and ensure a comprehensive investigation into the tragedy.
