New Delhi: Renowned Urdu poet and Padma Shri awardee Dr. Bashir Badr passed away in Bhopal on Wednesday after a prolonged illness. He was 91. Widely regarded as one of the most influential voices in modern Urdu poetry, Bashir Badr leaves behind a literary legacy that resonated across generations and linguistic boundaries.
Known for his emotionally rich yet simple style of writing, Badr’s poetry explored themes of love, loneliness, human relationships and the quiet pain of life. His couplets became deeply embedded in popular culture and were frequently quoted in literary gatherings, social conversations and public discourse.

Born on February 15, 1935, in Ayodhya, Bashir Badr completed his higher education, including a PhD, from Aligarh Muslim University. He later taught at the university before serving as Head of the Urdu Department at Meerut College for nearly 17 years.
He began writing poetry at a very young age and went on to become one of the most accessible and admired modern Urdu poets. His writing stood out for blending conversational language with emotional depth, making Urdu poetry relatable to a wider audience.
Among his most noted works are collections such as Aahat, Aamad, Aas, Image and Kulliyate Bashir Badr. His literary criticism and scholarly works also earned recognition in Urdu academic circles.
During his long literary career, Bashir Badr received several honours, including the Padma Shri. He was also recognised by multiple Urdu academies and international literary organisations.

Bashir Badr’s poetry often reflected personal hardship, resilience and emotional vulnerability. Despite facing tragedies, including the loss of his manuscripts and belongings in a devastating fire, he rebuilt his life and literary career in Bhopal.
His passing marks the end of an era in Urdu literature, but his timeless Ghazals and unforgettable couplets will continue to inspire poetry lovers for generations.
