Bengaluru: In a chilling incident from Nelamangala on the outskirts of Bengaluru, a 70-year-old woman was brutally murdered in her home while her disabled husband slept beside her, reportedly unaware of the attack. Gold jewellery worth approximately Rs65 lakh was allegedly stolen after the crime.

The victim, identified as Shobha, lived with her husband Ranganath in the Kote Beedi area of Hirapur, Nelamangala. The couple had no children and lived alone. Ranganath has reportedly been paralysed and bedridden for nearly 15 years.

According to police, the couple had returned home after their routine morning walk on the day of the incident. The crime came to light when a doctor arrived to provide physiotherapy to Ranganath and found Shobha lying next to him with her throat slit. Ranganath appeared unaware of what had occurred.

Accused Arrested

Police have arrested Shivkumar, a wholesale shop owner, in connection with the murder. Investigators allege that he broke into the house around 1:03 a.m. and attacked Shobha while her husband was beside her.

Police believe the motive was robbery. Shobha, reportedly the daughter of a jewellery shop owner, was wearing substantial gold ornaments at the time. After allegedly killing her, the accused searched the house for cash. When he found none, he removed her chain, bangles, and other jewellery.

Authorities estimate that around 450 grams of gold, valued at approximately Rs65 lakh, is missing.

CCTV footage reportedly shows the accused fleeing the area on a motorcycle shortly after the crime. Investigators traced the vehicle’s registration number using nearby surveillance cameras.

Returned to Scene as Spectator

Police sources claim that Shivkumar later returned to the crime scene during the initial investigation and blended into the crowd gathered outside the house. He subsequently left on his scooter in an apparent attempt to avoid suspicion.

Officers tracked the scooter’s registration number, which led them to the accused. Police have seized the motorcycle, the alleged murder weapon, and his mobile phone as part of the investigation.

Further inquiries are underway.
