New Delhi: On 26th February 2026, the CBI Court in Siliguri convicted Achintya Kumar Pramanik, the former Superintendent of Central Excise in Cooch Behar Division, for accepting bribes during his official tenure. The court sentenced him to four years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 40,000.
The case was registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on 14th September 2015 after a complaint alleged that Pramanik demanded a bribe of Rs. 1,00,000 from the proprietor of a private firm.
Acting on this complaint, the CBI conducted a trap operation on 15th September 2015, during which Pramanik was caught red-handed accepting Rs. 30,000. The bribe amount was immediately recovered from his possession, forming the key evidence in the case.
After completing the investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet against the accused on 30th December 2015. The court then conducted a detailed trial, examining evidence, witness testimonies, and the recovered bribe.
Upon reviewing the facts, the Hon’ble Court found Pramanik guilty and delivered the sentence, reinforcing accountability in public service and the judiciary’s commitment to tackling corruption.
