Police unravel cough syrup smuggling, major leads ahead
Sonbhadra: A major breakthrough has emerged in the district in connection with an illegal cough syrup trafficking case. Five accused arrested recently were produced before the Special NDPS Act Judge in the Sonbhadra court, where police sought custodial remand for further investigation.
Accepting the plea, the court sent all five to 14 days of police custody, giving investigators crucial time to unravel the wider network behind the racket.
The arrests were made days earlier during a joint operation conducted by Sonbhadra Police and Ghaziabad Police in Ghaziabad. After being detained, the accused were first presented before a Ghaziabad court and then brought to Sonbhadra on transit remand.
The case is registered at the Robertsganj Kotwali police station, and given its seriousness, local authorities have initiated an intensive probe to track the full extent of the illegal distribution chain.
Police have identified the arrested individuals as:
Sushil Yadav, son of Munnilal Yadav, resident of Jarwa Jatara village, Tikamgarh, Madhya Pradesh
Saurabh Tyagi, son of Mukesh Kumar Tyagi, resident of Makhanpur near Shani Chowk, Indirapuram, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh
Santosh Bhadana, son of Jaikar Singh, resident of House No. 42, Garhi Majra, Bhatta No. 5, Madhuban Bapu Dham, Ghaziabad
Shadab, son of Riyazuddin, resident of House No. 781, Lala Pramod Gali, Kaila Bhatta Chowk, Kotwali Nagar, Ghaziabad
According to police sources, the accused were allegedly involved in the illegal trade of narcotic cough syrup. A substantial quantity of contraband cough syrup was recovered during the operation. Investigators believe the supply extended beyond local markets to multiple districts and even other states.

After the court granted remand, police officials stated that custody was essential not only to question the accused about the seized stock but also to identify the scale and hierarchy of the entire trafficking network.
“We expect important leads from the interrogation. The aim is to expose every link connected to this illegal supply chain,” said the Sonbhadra Superintendent of Police.
The investigation is expected to reveal how far the illegal cough syrup distribution had spread and which cities and towns were being supplied. Authorities believe that the next few days of interrogation could lead to significant new disclosures and possibly more arrests.
The police, in coordination with the local administration and the Health Department, have intensified the probe to ensure the entire illicit network is dismantled.
