New Delhi: A day after a 20-year-old Delhi college student alleged she was attacked with acid near Lakshmibai College in Ashok Vihar, police have found major inconsistencies in her statement. Investigators said they have not recovered any traces of acid at the alleged spot and are probing why the student got off her e-rickshaw 200 metres from the college gates. While the woman claims a stalker and his two friends threw acid on her, police sources describe the allegations as “suspicious” and still under investigation.

What Happened in the Alleged Attack

According to the survivor’s complaint, three men, Ishan, Arman, and an unidentified associate — stopped her on the way to college and attacked her with acid after an argument. The woman suffered burns on her hands while trying to shield her face. Hospital officials confirmed she sustained minor acid burns and is likely to be discharged soon.

Her brother told the media that one of the accused had been stalking her for months and had been confronted by the family earlier. However, police are still tracing the three accused, who are absconding.

Twist in the Case: Cross Complaint Filed

In a surprising turn, the wife of the main accused, Ishan, has filed a complaint against the survivor’s father. She alleged that he forced her into a relationship when she worked for him and later blackmailed her using private videos. Police are now investigating both cases simultaneously — the alleged acid attack and the counter sexual exploitation complaint.

Why Do Acid Attacks Still Happen?

Even as doubts remain about the Delhi case, it reignites a grim reality — acid attacks remain one of India’s most brutal crimes against women. Experts say they often stem from obsession, rejection, or revenge, with attackers aiming to destroy not just a victim’s appearance but her confidence and social standing. Despite bans and stricter punishments under Section 326A of the Indian Penal Code, hundreds of such cases continue to occur every year.

How to Prevent and Respond to Acid Attacks

Activists stress that prevention must go beyond laws. Public awareness, early intervention against stalking, and tighter control on acid sales are critical. Citizens must report harassment early, and retailers must strictly follow the government’s acid sale restrictions.

If an acid attack occurs, experts advise immediate first aid, rinse the area with clean, cool water for at least 30 minutes and remove contaminated clothing before seeking medical help.

The Bigger Picture

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has written to Delhi Police, urging swift investigation, medical care, and compensation for the survivor. Whether or not the incident proves to be an actual acid attack, it serves as a stark reminder of the social and legal gaps that continue to endanger women across India.
