Thiruvananthapuram: Politics in Kerala has intensified after artery forceps were discovered in a woman’s abdomen following a 2021 surgery at Alappuzha Medical College. The shocking revelation has triggered statewide protests, with the Youth Congress demanding the resignation of State Health Minister Veena George.

Police have registered a case against Dr. Lalithambika, the former head of the gynecology department at Alappuzha Medical College, in connection with the incident. As the news surfaced, Youth Congress workers staged protests outside the minister’s official residence in Thiruvananthapuram, raising black flags, shouting slogans, and holding a sit-in demonstration.

At the time, the minister was attending official events in Pathanamthitta. According to police, only three security personnel were present at the residence, making it difficult to immediately control the protest.

Minister Responds, Blames Opposition

Reacting to the controversy, Veena George said the government acted promptly once the matter came to light and ordered a thorough investigation. She clarified that the surgery took place several years ago and asserted that the Health Minister neither performed the operation nor trained the doctors involved.

The minister accused Leader of the Opposition V. D. Satheesan of orchestrating the protests at her residence. She alleged that the Congress party is attempting to create unrest ahead of the upcoming elections and is resorting to unfair tactics for political gain.

CPI(M) Condemns Protest at Minister’s Residence

The ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) strongly criticized the demonstration outside the minister’s house. Senior party leader P. K. Sreemathi termed the protest “uncivilized” and an insult to women, demanding an apology from the Youth Congress. State Education Minister V. Sivankutty also remarked that while protests are part of democracy, there are limits that must not be crossed.

Tensions at Public Event

The controversy spilled over to a public event attended by the minister, where Congress workers raised slogans. Supporters of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) gathered in response, briefly creating a tense situation.

Veena George further alleged that the opposition is attempting to defame the state’s public health system to benefit private hospitals. She dismissed claims of anti-incumbency, stating that the Congress is deliberately trying to create a volatile political atmosphere.

The incident has not only raised serious concerns about medical negligence but has also sparked a sharp political confrontation in the state.
