HC grills TN Chief Secretary, DGP, and Collector
New Delhi: A hearing was held on Tuesday in the ongoing dispute regarding the traditional lamp lighting ceremony on the hill during the Karthigai Deepam festival at the famous Thirupparankundram Murugan Temple in Madurai.
During the hearing, Madras High Court Justice G. R. Swaminathan directed top officials to appear before the court for failing to comply with his order. In fact, Justice G.R. Swaminathan of the Madras High Court, while hearing a contempt petition filed by Ram Ravikumar, issued a strong order directing top officials, including the Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu, the DGP, the Madurai Collector, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police, to appear personally before the court.
Regarding the contempt of court proceedings, advocate Karthikeyan N. told the media that a statutory notice has been issued to the Deputy Commissioner of Police of Madurai, asking why contempt of court proceedings should not be initiated against him. The petitioner's lawyer said that the officials are trying to prolong the matter without complying with the court's order.
Meanwhile, Additional Advocate General Veera Kathiravan, appearing for the state, stated that a special leave petition filed by the Tamil Nadu authorities challenging the single judge's order regarding the lighting of the lamp on the Thirupparankundram hill is pending before the Supreme Court.
What is the whole case?
It may be recalled that on December 1, Justice Swaminathan had ordered the temple management to make arrangements for lighting a lamp on a stone pillar on the Thirupparankundram hill during the Karthigai Deepam festival on December 3.
However, despite the court order, the event did not take place, so the judge allowed the petitioner and ten others to light the lamp on the evening of December 3 with CISF security.
Subsequently, on December 4, the court accepted the contempt petition and quashed the prohibitory order issued by the district collector during the Karthigai Deepam festival.
