Amaravati: A shocking incident has cast a shadow over the cricketing atmosphere in India, where the excitement of IPL 2026 is otherwise at its peak. In a tragic turn of events, a 21-year-old umpire was stabbed to death following a dispute during a local cricket match in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
According to reports, the match was being officiated by Dola Ajit Babu and his colleague Budumuri Chiranjeevi when tensions flared over a contentious run-out decision. The disagreement quickly escalated into a heated argument among players on the field.
Both umpires stepped in to defuse the situation and were initially successful in calming those involved. However, a spectator identified as Kanta Kishore began verbally abusing the players and officials, reigniting tensions.

Police officials stated that after the match, Kishore asked the umpires to meet him at another location to resolve the issue. Ajit Babu and Chiranjeevi, accompanied by a few friends, went to the agreed spot. Unfortunately, the situation spiraled out of control once again.
During the confrontation, Kishore allegedly pulled out a knife and attacked both umpires. Ajit Babu suffered a fatal stab wound to the chest and collapsed at the scene. Chiranjeevi was also seriously injured while trying to defend himself, and another individual who attempted to intervene sustained injuries as well.

All injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital. Due to the severity of his injuries, Ajit Babu was later shifted to Apollo Hospital, where he was declared dead by doctors.
The incident has sparked outrage and raised serious concerns about safety and discipline in local-level sports events. Police have launched an investigation into the matter.
