Rampur: A woman has been booked by Uttar Pradesh Police for allegedly obtaining a government teaching position by concealing her Pakistani citizenship, officials said on Tuesday. The First Information Report (FIR) was registered at Azim Nagar police station in Rampur district following a complaint filed by the Basic Education Department.

According to officials, the case surfaced after an internal verification exercise conducted by the department revealed serious discrepancies in the woman’s documents. The accused has been identified as Mahira Akhtar, also known as Farzana, who was employed as a primary school teacher in Kumhariya village under the Basic Education Department.

Departmental Inquiry Uncovers Alleged Misrepresentation

Police officials stated that Mahira Akhtar reportedly married a Pakistani national in 1979 and subsequently acquired Pakistani citizenship. After her divorce, she is alleged to have returned to India on a Pakistani passport and married a local resident around 1985.

Investigators claim that during the same period, she secured employment as a government teacher by presenting herself as an Indian citizen. The alleged misrepresentation came to light during a routine verification process, which indicated that she held Pakistani nationality at the time of her appointment.

Services Terminated, Investigation Ongoing

Following the findings of the departmental inquiry, the education department first placed her under suspension and later terminated her services. Based on the inquiry report, police proceeded to register a case against her.

Additional Superintendent of Police Anurag Singh confirmed that an FIR has been lodged under sections 318(4), 336, 338, and 340 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertain to cheating, forgery, and use of fraudulent documents.

“It is alleged that despite being a Pakistani national, the accused secured a job in the education department using a forged residence certificate,” Singh said, adding that the investigation is currently underway. No arrest has been made so far, and authorities are in the process of collecting documentary and testimonial evidence. The case has raised concerns over verification mechanisms in government recruitment processes.
