Dhaka:  A Hindu garment worker, identified as Dipu Chandra Das, was brutally lynched by a mob in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, amid ongoing unrest in Bangladesh following the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi. The country’s interim government has arrested ten people in connection with the attack.

Violence Sparks Amid Pro-Democracy Uprising

The unrest erupted after a youth leader of Bangladesh’s 2024 pro-democracy movement, who had been injured in an assassination attempt, died in a hospital in Singapore on December 19. The death triggered protests and violence in the capital and surrounding areas.

Details of the Lynching

Dipu Chandra Das, 25, worked at the Pioneer Knit Composite Factory in the Square Masterbari area of Mymensingh. According to reports, he was attacked by a mob over allegations of blasphemy. The assailants reportedly tied him to a tree, doused him with kerosene, and set him on fire. His body was later left tied outside, with both the torso and head burned.

Speaking to NDTV, Dipu’s father, Ravilal Das, described the horror of learning about his son’s death. “We first saw it on Facebook and then heard more from people. Eventually, someone told me my brother…my brother, he was beaten, beaten badly,” Ravilal said. “The mob then poured kerosene on my son and set him on fire. His burned body was left outside. It was horrible.”
