Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay's highly awaited film Jana Nayagan will release at theatres on Thursday, July 23 after months of delay, controversy and public speculation. Being marketed as the actor's last film before dedicating himself to politics, the political action thriller has drawn a lot of attention from the filmgoers as well as the political analysts.
Jana Nayagan is directed by H. Vinoth and it is set to release around seven months later and even more relevance has been given when Vijay was sworn in as the CM after his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) won a surprise Assembly Election victory.
The film is promoted as Vijay's last film appearance on the big screen, before he goes into full-time politics. Vijay launched his political party, TVK and then set his focus on contesting the Elections in which the party won a victory in the surprise Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.
Now, being the CM of Tamil Nadu, Jana Nayagan serves as the last exit of Vijay’s huge acting career and marks the beginning of his full-time political career.
The film was initially scheduled to release during Pongal in January 2026. However, production and post-production were delayed as Vijay concentrated on his political campaign ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
The project also found itself in the middle of controversies, including censorship discussions, online leaks and allegations of political manipulation. Despite these hurdles, the makers locked July 23, 2026, as the final release date.
Last week, Vijay confirmed the release by sharing a new poster on social media with the hashtag #JanaNayaganFromJuly23.
Directed by H. Vinoth, the political action thriller stars Vijay, Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Prakash Raj, Priyamani, Mamitha Baiju and Gautham Vasudev Menon in key roles.
Based on its teaser, Vijay plays an ordinary man who unexpectedly rises to become a leader, a storyline many believe mirrors his real-life political journey. The film has received an 'A' certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification.
Jana Nayagan was leaked online in HD for months before it went to theatres, leading to a lot of debate. Director H. Vinoth has told the media why Vijay did not make a public appeal against piracy.
Vinoth told the media that such an appeal would have closed a can of worms. People would have questioned why Vijay was talking about the leak of a film when there were bigger matters to discuss. He also said that Vijay wanted to distance himself from the matter so it cannot become politicised.
Vinoth also told the media that rumours about the leak being politically backed were purely political mileage. He told the media that Vijay was not the Chief Minister when the film was leaked and also had no political clout at the time.
