New Delhi: A study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) unfolds dangers data about the number of people suffering from infectious diseases. Infact this threat is being felt across the world.

These infectious diseases include non-communicable diseases such as cancer, diabetes, various heart disease, and respiratory problems. This research by ICMR says that this danger of this infectious diseases increased the pressure on the health sector. At the same time experts are worried about this trend.

According to reports the ICMR research found that pathogens are found in over 11 percent 4.5 lakh patients were found suffering from infections including Influenza A in acute respiratory infection (ARI)/ severe acute respiratory infections (SARI), dengue virus, acute fever and hemorrhagic fever cases, jaundice, acute diarrheal disease (ADD) and Herpes simplex virus (HSV) in Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) cases.

Increasing Infection Rate

According to the ICMR report, a steady increase in infection cases has been recorded.

Between January and March 2025, 24,502 (10.7%) out of 2.28 lakh samples tested were found positive.

Between April and June 2025, 26,055 (11.5%) out of 2.26 lakh samples tested were confirmed infected.

This represents an increase of 0.8 percentage points in the infection rate. Experts say that if comprehensive measures are not taken in time, this risk could increase further in the coming years.

Expert Opinion

A senior scientist explained, "This increase may seem minor, but it cannot be ignored. It is a warning about seasonal diseases and emerging infections. If we continue to monitor quarterly changes in infection rates, future epidemics can be prevented in time."

Reasons for Rising Infections

According to the ICMR report, 191 disease clusters were identified between April and June 2025, including infections such as mumps, measles, rubella, dengue, chikungunya, rotavirus, norovirus, varicella zoster virus, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and astrovirus.

Experts believe that several reasons are behind the increase in these diseases—new pathogen species, poor sanitation, overcrowding, rapid urbanization, climate change, population growth, and socio-economic inequalities. Furthermore, a lack of access to healthcare and increased human-animal contact have accelerated the spread of infections.

This ICMR report clearly indicates that the threat of infectious diseases is gradually increasing in the country. Experts say that if surveillance, sanitation, and public health systems are not strengthened, India could face a serious health crisis in the coming years.
